I didn't have a problem installing the Orcas March CTP in a VMWare machine running Vista. No errors -- no problems at all.

Here I'm talking about running it on your own machine. a VPC is OK (I said that this is the only solution), but I'd ask how slow it is if running such a resource-hangry Windows like Vista.

It installed fine for me with the self extracting install... Not a single problem came up and it's not installed inside VMware just a regular desktop (allthough I do have VMware installed also), i'm using Vista Ultimate if that matters on AMD FX53 and 2gig of ram.

It runs fast for me, I like it! :)

Could you tell me which download page did you use? and how many parts was the downlod?

Could they make it more difficult and confusing. 8 files? 800MB average size, no download tool or torrent. MS is demanding that we spend our precious time trying to get the actual CTP.

Works for me just fine.  I am using Vista Ultimate set up as with the home networking security features.  Yes, it's the self-extracting installer I'm talking about.

I just went to google and typed "march orcas download"

then clicked the first microsoft.com link: Download details: Visual Studio Code Name "Orcas" March 2007 CTP

That got me to the VPC image, then i just scrolled down to the very bottom and clicked on the link: Microsoft Pre-release Software Visual Studio Code Name "Orcas" - March Community Technology Preview (CTP) (Self-extracting Install)

And downloaded the 7 files, worked first time no troubles... If that is the one you tried the only other thing i could say is to make sure the file sizes are right, possibly you didn't download all of one of the files, i.e. the download failed part of the way... I also have WinRAR installed on my system, duno if that matters, it shouldn't since it's self extracting...

Just to verify I went in the Orcas Help/About and it says:

Microsoft Visual Studio Codename "Orcas" Team Suite, March 2007 CTP, 372 days remaining.

But then a little lower it says this:

Microsoft Visual Studio Codename Orcas
Version 9.0.20209.0 feb07ctp
Microsoft .NET Framework
Version 2.0.50727

Hey Paul,
First, for me as sepecific case, I've other developers in the same company who had it working on their Windows XP machines, using the same extracted download files (which came from the same download page you linked to).

In general, googling this, I even found more cases than the ones in Channel9 forums. Windows Vista is not  included in the supported operating systems on the download page

I really don't know how it works on some machines and some not. This is most likely the same reason they didn't include Vista in the supported OSs I guess. I hope to find a workaround for this or know the reason, especially that my system has only all the typical developer stuff no more!!!
