What is your favorite interview style

We were trying to find the best recruitment process, that can be as fast as possible and brings good staff as well as making a good reputation to the company, so we tried many styles

The first style was to put an ad in the newspapers, and we received TONS of C.V's, and this made us waste a lot of time refining these CV's.
Then we rented a big place in a Hilton and invited everybody to a workshop, in order to see everybody working so we can choose clearly
the candidates who worked well in the workshop, proceed to a personal interview.
The result of this expensive workshop just TWO out of a big group of candidates.
So, we decided that this process is really waste of time and money and we made another process.

The second style was to make HARD technical exam to the candidates,
15 Q's C#, 10 DB Q's and 5 Q's general programming (Total 40 Q's)
the candidates who got good marks in the exam, proceed to a personal interview.
and the result of this process was better, as we got about NINE people, and we didn't pay as much as we did in the first phase.

The third style was to make an EASIER exam, because we thought that we could have missed some good people just because they were surprised by the questions, so we
made the exam total 20 Q's (10 C#, 2 General Programming, 5 DB and 3 General IT Knowledge)
and here comes the funny part, some people refused to take the exam and considered it as an insult for them to take technical exam, some of them didn't answer at all, and the others accepted to take the exam after we convinced them and their answers were really bad.

As you can see we put some General IT Knowledge like most common used technical abbreviations (XML, XSL, HTTP, DTD, WCF, WF ... etc) . and the surprise thing that no body got more than 10 out of 20 abbreviations, and they are supposed to work as Senior Software Developers !!!!!!!!

So after this, we are still trying to find the best recruitment process?, so what is Your Favorite One ??????

What about an interactive exam on a pc , develop a program or a web page, this can insure that the applicant is really qualified for the required job , and it can be adjusted to fullfil your needs.

The best way to get to know a person is a face to face technical interview.
The questions you need to ask will depend on the position you need, but obviously, you can set up an interview and grill the interviewee on OOAD and new technologies. You can also get a good idea about this person's previous experience and personality type.
All other exam techniques, in my humble opinion, are just a waste of time.

Well, I think a face to face technical interview + 5 small web applications to debug it!

What do you think?

There is one major downside of doing just face to face interview. Time.

You will have to allocate developers time to properly interview somebody. If you have done enough interview, you'll get sick of it especially after yet another idiots come in your interview slot.

It takes to much bloody time to do a face to face interview to discover that your candidate is a complete doo doo.

Exam is not perfect, however :
- We can filter a lot of unqualified people like "sorry buddy, you better change your career because you are not going anywhere".
- Having exams allow us to reach accross the 'resume boundaries'. If you are just out of school and can pass our test, you are hired.
- And we can test 15-20 people in the same day.

We rarely care about resume unless you have done something really really cool.
